The Social Policy Institute at Washington University and the Center for Household Financial Stability at the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis invite you to a virtual conversation at 1 p.m. on June 4 with Jonathan Gruber and Simon Johnson, authors of Jump-Starting America: How Breakthrough Science Can Revive Economic Growth and the American Dream.
Gruber and Johnson rely on lessons from history to build a blueprint for the next economic growth engine. Among their ideas, the pair argue for significant federal investment in technology and science industries in middle-America cities such as St. Louis. The result? More high-quality jobs and innovation that benefits the entire country, not just a few large cities. Daffney Moore, chief opportunity officer at St. Louis Opportunity Zones, will join the dialogue, adding a St. Louis perspective.

About the Speakers:
Jonathan Gruber is the Ford Professor of Economics at MIT. An architect of both Romneycare and Obamacare, he appears regularly on news outlets ranging from Fox News to MSNBC. Slate has named him one of the top twenty-five “Most Innovative and Practical Thinkers of Our Time.” In addition to over 175 academic articles, he is the author of Health Care Reform (Hill & Wang), a graphic novel about the Affordable Care Act, Public Finance and Public Policy (Worth), the leading textbook in public finance, and six other books.
Simon Johnson is the Ronald A. Kurtz (1954) Professor of Entrepreneurship at MIT and former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund. His much-viewed opinion pieces have appeared in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, the Atlantic, and elsewhere. With law professor James Kwak, Simon is the coauthor of the best sellers 13 Bankers and White House Burning and a founder of the widely cited economics blog The Baseline Scenario.
Daffney Moore is the chief opportunity zone officer at St. Louis Opportunity Zones and is working to position the city as a leader in utilizing Opportunity Zones. She is the former city manager of East St. Louis and has worked throughout her career to address problems dealing with urban growth, revitalization, housing and commercial development to tackle social and economic issues in the community.
