Data for Social Impact Events
Data can be a powerful tool, particularly in the social sector, with unique opportunities and challenges alike. However, the majority of available data-focused resources are designed to build technical skills. Fewer resources are designed to build capacity around elements of responsible data use or strategies for utilizing data to impact people’s lives and promote equitable outcomes.
The Data for Social Impact (DSI) initiative is works to offer free, accessible training and programming opportunities tailored to the priorities and needs of social sector organizations seeking to build capacity in these areas. This event series is informed by our community and advisory committee, our approach identified during our roundtables led the development of resources and learning events, which concluded in November 2022.
More Than a Number: Data Storytelling for Social Impact – October 30, 2024
When we think of data, we often think of numbers: demographics, performance metrics, health statistics, or population counts. But equitable data practice requires a broader understanding that values stories, lived experience, and people sharing their views in their own words.
In this session, participants will explore how stories and qualitative data can help us understand impact and hear how social sector organizations are integrating these strategies into their work.
Session topics include:
- The importance of qualitative data in arts and broader social service sectors
- The power of narrative and storytelling in designing for and evaluating impact
- Equitable approaches to analyzing qualitative data
Confirmed Presenters:
Dr. Jong-Bum Kwon, Cultural Anthropologist, Webster University
Ashley Moore, Evaluation Coordinator, Brown School Evaluation Center
MK Stallings, Research and Evaluation Manager, Regional Arts Commission
