Laura McDermott (she/they) is a Research Assistant for the Social Policy Institute. She is currently a MSW/MSP dual degree student concentrating in Violence and Trauma in Communities at the Brown School. She received her BSW and BS in Psychology from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to SPI, Laura spent time as a research intern for zero suicide and gun reform at Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network, working with survivors of child sex trafficking, and working in post-conviction relief in Tennessee. Her current role at SPI is doing qualitative research for Operation Food Search and the Normandy School Collaborative, which is focusing on mitigating food insecurity and improving health outcomes. Her interests include policy, violence prevention/interventions, and the implications of racism, poverty, and intergenerational trauma on community well-being. In her free time, Laura enjoys hiking, doing yoga, and saying hello to all the neighborhood dogs as she’s walking.
