Government Investment Priorities as a Structural Determinant of Health: Interrogating the Carceral Resource Index.

Join us on Thursday, May 4, for a virtual conversation with Northeastern University law professor Leo Beletsky, JD, MPH.

About this event

Join the Social Policy Institute, WashU School of Medicine, and SAMHSA in a discussion with Professor Leo Beletsky on his work surrounding the Structural Determinants of Health and the use of the Carceral Resource Index. Professor Leo Beletsky has conducted groundbreaking research on the intersection of law enforcement and substance use disorder outcomes. He currently serves as Professor of Law and Health Sciences at Northeastern University, where he directs the Health in Justice Action Lab. He is considered one of the world’s leading experts on harm reduction law and policy, having published his seminal work on the structural determinants of the overdose endemic in journals such as JAMA, BMJ, Lancet, Health Affairs, and the New England Journal of Medicine.

During this event, Professor Beletsky will be speaking about his work on using big data to study structural violence, specifically the use of carceral resource indices to understand government investment priorities. In addition, we will be hosting a Q&A with Professor Beletsky on career development topics, such as the challenge of conducting research in areas traditionally seen outside the NIH mainstream.

Phil Marotta, assistant professor at the Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis, will be introducing Professor Beletsky.

The event will take place virtually on May 4th.
